Parikram¢ Of ¹r¤ Girir¢jaj¤

In the western coast of India, in the island of ¹almal¤, lived Dro´¢cala, the king of the mountains. Once a sage by the name of Pulastya, came to him to take his son Girir¢ja with him to K¢ºh¤ (V¢r¢´as¤). After offering some initial resistance, Girir¢ja, somehow agreed to go with him only on condition that he should not put him down on the earth in between. If he does so, he would stay there forever.

When they were flying over the Vraja bh¦mi, Girir¢ja increased his weight to the extent that Pulastya had no option but to put him down. Pulastya understood the mischief of Girir¢ja. He became furious and cursed him that he would decrease by a grain everyday. But then repenting on the curse he gave to Girir¢ja, he assured him that he would be blessed in the Dv¢para Yuga and everybody would start worshipping him since then.

This happened in the Satya yuga. Brahm¢j¤ wished to create the Dv¢para Yuga but because of the portentous phenomenon of R¢va´a, he had to create the Tret¢ Yuga. In this yuga, Hanum¢naj¤ on the instructions of Lord R¢ma, came to take Girir¢ja for the cause of constructing a pull on the ocean.

Girir¢ja at once agreed to go for the service of Lord R¢ma. But before they reached, the pull was ready and there was no need of additional stones. Girir¢ja was very dissappointed on not having the darºana of Lord R¢ma.

On knowing the sorrow of Girir¢ja, Lord R¢ma sent a message saying that, ""by the end of the Dv¢para Yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ¹r¤ K¨¾´a will Himself be incarnated and play on you and will also worship you. In the kaliyuga, the devotees shall attain numerous divine supernatural powers by worshipping you.''

In S¢rasvata Kalpa, i.e. the end of the Dv¢para Yuga, Bhagav¢n ¹r¤ K¨¾´a stopped the worship of Indra and started the Govardhana P¦ja by doing Himself. It was a wonderful sight. Being worshipped by ¹r¤ K¨¾´a, Girir¢ja himself became like ¹r¤ K¨¾´a. It was like He (¹r¤ K¨¾´a) worshipping Himself. Since then all the six seasons resided permanently on Girir¢ja.

Besides this, the eight gates of the A¾°a Sakh¢'s from where they entered the nitya l¤l¢, are also on the Girir¢ja. The A¾°a Sakh¢'s, who reside on the Girir¢ja in differrent places, were passionately attached to their respsctive idols.
